Exciting and enjoyable programmes of baroque music for public concerts and private functions

Canzona aims to explore little-known and unjustly neglected repertoire as well as to perform better-known works with an informed and fresh approach, creating well balanced and interesting programmes with appeal for a wide audience.  Our repertoire spans the 17th and 18th centuries but we have a very special interest in performing 17th century music, where Theresa Caudle’s unusual versatility in playing both violin and cornett provides a unique slant on our programme planning.

Chamber Music……

VENETIAN GRACES – early 17th century music from Venice and beyond.

Three unusually versatile musicians; Theresa Caudle, Emily White and Rebecca Miles on cornett, sackbut and recorder, who all also play the violin, are accompanied by Alastair Ross on the organ and harpsichord. They present a richly varied programme with a wealth of different combinations of instruments in music by Gabrieli, Frescobaldi, Castello, Fontana, Rossi and their contemporaries.

Four players – three violins, cornett, sackbut, recorder, organ and harpsichord.

VIOLINO O CORNETTO - Virtuoso 17th century Italian sonatas for violin and cornett.

Theresa Caudle plays both instruments in a programme which highlights the development of the solo sonata in 17th century Italy. At the beginning of the century much of the repertoire was intended for either the violin or the cornett; through the century a more idiomatic style of writing for the violin developed, culminating in the incomparable sonatas of Arcangelo Corelli.

The programme includes music by Cima, Frescobaldi, Castello, Marini, Uccellini, Stradella and Corelli.

This programme is adaptable for two, three or four players. Violin and cornett with organ and harpsichord, plus possible violone and chitarrone.

AYRES FOR THE THEATRE - with Philippa Hyde, soprano.

A programme of music for the English stage by Matthew Locke, Henry Purcell and their contemporaries.  We intersperse 17th century settings of songs from plays such as Shakespeare’s The Tempest with instrumental overtures, “curtain tunes” and dances. The second half features extended excerpts from Purcell’s “The Fairy Queen”.

“Silvery voiced, fluent, articulate, agile…she is a pleasure to hear”

      International Record Review, March 2011

Soprano with five or six players - 2 violins, viola, bass violin, harpsichord and optional theorbo.

THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND – with Robert Farley, baroque trumpet.

Robert Farley is one of the finest exponents of the baroque, valveless trumpet.  This programme explores the early trumpet repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries from both England and Italy, by well-known composers such as Purcell and Corelli, alongside pieces by lesser-known figures such as Gottfried Finger and Alessandro Stradella.

Playing alongside a quartet of strings, Bob Farley’s mastery of his instrument brings out its sweet and mellifluous characteristics, as well as all the excitement and virtuosity that we naturally expect from this instrument..

Six players - trumpet, 2 violins, viola, bass violin, harpsichord

A selection of our programmes……

“Given the status and reputation of the performers it is stating the obvious when I say that it was a superb concert. The early music movement has gone through many phases culminating in performances like these, combining the right period instruments and bows, precision and sensitivity.”

Peter Davies: Newbury Weekly News

“Just as the members of a string quartet would interact, so Canzona’s instrumentalists breathed together in the Adagio sections and struck sparks off each other in the Allegros”

Barry Millington: The Times

The following is just a selection of the programmes that Canzona can offer.  If you have any special ideas or a theme for the coming season and feel that our interests would suit your own ideas, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be very happy to discuss possibilities.
